For that project, Garber said that the city of Brentwood provided the trees, but Helping Hands volunteers often bring their own tools and equipment to the volunteer sites, including buckets, gloves, shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows.

EAST COUNTY — At one time it might have been complicated for local government agencies and nonprofit organizations to rally a big group of volunteers for a bigger project, but that has all changed with the emergence of the Helping Hands program.

In fact, Helping Hands member Karen Berg stated that the program shows the younger generation about the value of giving back to their communities.

It teaches them that service brings people joy, she said.
