Contra Costa, Alameda: Agriculture finds room to grow

While U-pick berries, Livermore wine grapes and Brentwood sweet corn may be most people’s mental image of East Bay agriculture, Contra Costa and Alameda counties produce a broad variety of crops and livestock — and in a broad array of settings.

And even with the explosion of completely new subdivisions and strip malls in the early 2000s, and nontheless, despite the drought after that, ag’s various guises remain a key economic driver in both counties after almost two hundred years. Some sectors are on a distinct upswing, including cattle, wine grapes and urban farms, and overall ag income is trending upward.
